Kurotani Washi, a paper-making village in Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a very rare type of Japanese paper that is made one sheet at a time by craftsmen.
Because it is strong, long-lasting, and can withstand long-term storage, it is also used in the restoration of cultural properties.
The rare Kurotani Unryu paper is used to make special washi for Tsujikura’s Japanese umbrellas.
The color of the janome umbrella is deep red, reminiscent of a maiko.
The washi craftsman said that it was very difficult to produce the specified color.
As Tsujikura hoped, the deep red Unryu paper was finally ready.
The skilled craftsmen took time to carefully finish it into a snake eyes umbrella.

From the raw materials to the finished product, the craftsmen insist on the real thing.

The handle of the umbrella is made of black bamboo.
When the umbrella is closed, it looks like a thin and beautiful bamboo.
The paper is made of long fibers of Kozo (paper mulberry), which are torn by hand and scattered on the ground paper to create a cloud-like pattern.
When the umbrella is opened, you can hear the crispy sound of the folded washi coming apart piece by piece.
The clasp that determines the opening of the umbrella is made of wood, not metal.
The clicking sound of the wood resonates comfortably.
