A traditional craft that has been preserved and nurtured through a long history.
Kurotani Washi,” from the paper-making village of Ayabe, Kyoto, is a very rare type of Japanese paper that is made entirely by hand by craftsmen.
Kurotani washi is used in the restoration of cultural properties because of its durability and longevity, and its ability to withstand long-term preservation.
Tsujikura’s skilled craftsmen carefully crafted this rare Kurotani Unryu paper into a snake’s-eye umbrella over a long period of time.

According to the ancient Chinese philosophy of the five elements, the black dragon is the guardian god of the northern direction. It is a legendary divine beast, but it is also a god closely related to water and is considered to have powerful power.
This Wagasa is made from Kurotani (Kyoto) Washi Unryu paper, the strongest of Tsujikura’s Wagasa.
We expressed “Black Dragon” with this Wagasa that has both beauty and toughness.

Black is said to be strong enough not to be influenced by others because it is not dyed by other colors.
Washi before it is made into a Wagasa is also very beautiful, but a tailored Wagasa has a beautiful transparency of the Kozo (paper mulberry) of Washi.
The beauty of the paper stands out beautifully.

The number of washi craftsmen has been decreasing with the changing times, and is now in the single digits.
However, the number of craftsmen is still relatively young, mainly in their 30s and 40s, and the production area is very active.
While preserving the traditional “handmade paper” technique that has continued for more than 800 years, the production area is also strengthening the development of new products and the production area’s brand.

This umbrella is made with Washi paper. It is slim and light, the most simple style and easy to use. It is recommended for the first Wagasa. Maiko and Geiko in Kyoto are actually using this type of Wagasa.

Handling Method

How to Use the Wagasa
When you walk carrying the closed umbrella, please grasp the head of the Wagasa, or for Janome please grasp the cord on the head, and for Bangasa please hold the leather strings bound around the head.

How to Open the Wagasa
The Wagasa may be difficult to open due to the waterproof grease on the Washi. Please lightly grasp the bottom of the runner at the bottom inside the umbrella, and slowly and carefully push to the top to open the Wagasa.
