Surrounded by mountains and blessed with the clear waters of the Kurotani River, Kurotani in Ayabe City, Kyoto, is home to the traditional craft of Kurotani Washi.
We visited the workshop where the Kurotani Washi that Tsujikura’s artisans use in their everyday umbrella-making is produced.

From the hands that use the material to the place where the material itself is created.
It was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of washi-making and to take a fresh look at the craft of making wagasa each day.

From the hands that make the paper to the hands that shape the umbrella.
With gratitude for this precious material, we will continue to carefully craft each and every wagasa, one by one.
