Hand-Painted Yuzen Parasol Featuring the Lion
The lion, though not native to East Asia, has long been depicted in Japanese painting and sculpture. Based only on stories brought from the West, artists and sculptors imagined its appearance by drawing inspiration from animals such as dogs and wolves. As a result, the traditional Japanese image of the lion differs greatly from that of a real lion.
Over time, the lion came to be regarded as a sacred mythical creature, much like the phoenix. As the "King of Beasts," it symbolizes majesty, power, and authority. Lion statues are also commonly placed alongside guardian komainu at the entrances of shrines and temples, where they serve as protectors of sacred spaces.
This design is the work of a hand-painted Yuzen artist and evokes the timeless beauty of masterpieces created by the great masters of the past. It is currently being crafted into a traditional Japanese parasol.
