We have captured the world of the "Wisteria Maiden" in this special parasol, combining delicate paper cutout artistry with the traditional techniques of Kyoto Japanese umbrellas.

The dignified black silhouette of the Wisteria Maiden emerges against the white washi paper.
Every detail—the wisteria flower clusters, the intricate patterns on the kimono, and the woman's supple posture—is expressed through fine lines, with a limited color palette that makes its beauty stand out even more.

When opened, the radial pattern of the bamboo ribs overlaps with the paper cutout design, creating an aesthetic that feels as though a scene from the stage is quietly appearing before you.

We use washi paper handed down in Kurotani, Kyoto. The soft expression of the paper as it catches the light, combined with the shadows cast by the black paper cutout, makes this piece truly unique.

'Kurotani Washi' from the papermaking village of Ayabe, Kyoto, is an extremely rare paper produced entirely by hand, sheet by sheet, by artisans.

It is characterized by its durability and longevity, making it suitable for cultural property restoration and other long-term preservation needs.

We have had Kurotani paper custom-made for our Tsujikura umbrellas. When held up to the light, the long-fibered kozo in this meticulously crafted paper stands out beautifully.

How to Use the Wagasa
When you walk carrying the closed umbrella, please grasp the head of the Wagasa, or for Janome please grasp the cord on the head, and for Bangasa please hold the leather strings bound around the head.

How to Open the Wagasa
The Wagasa may be difficult to open due to the waterproof grease on the Washi. Please lightly grasp the bottom of the runner at the bottom inside the umbrella, and slowly and carefully push to the top to open the Wagasa.
