Hand-painted Japanese Parasol “Kobai Hakubai” (Red and White Plum Blossoms)
Hand-painted Wagasa: Red and White Plum Blossoms
This hand-painted Wagasa features red and white plum blossoms blooming amidst the snow, a theme inspired by traditional Japanese painting. The restrained brushwork and quiet composition capture the serene essence of winter, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. Crafted from handmade washi paper, the parasol captures light softly, allowing the plum blossoms to emerge quietly when illuminated. The natural texture of the paper fibers adds warmth and depth to the artwork.
More than just a functional tool, this is a masterpiece for appreciating light, craftsmanship, and the beauty of the seasons. Holding it and gazing through the filtered light reveals a tranquil and timeless elegance. It is also highly recommended as a special gift.
The fragrant red and white plum blossoms, blooming proudly under the cold winter sky, are depicted on ivory-colored Unryu-shi (Cloud Dragon paper). The elegant pattern reflects the Rinpa style, utilizing techniques such as tarashikomi (dripping-in) and blurring for a sophisticated finish. The washi paper used is Kurotani Washi from the famous paper-making village in Kyoto. The hand-painted dragon is depicted with powerful brushstrokes and exquisite detail, giving the entire umbrella a sense of vitality and presence as if it were alive.
The handle is made from natural white bamboo, characterized by its smooth, comfortable feel and beautiful appearance. The interior of the parasol is adorned with decorative colored threads, making it exceptionally beautiful when opened. Each piece is a unique creation by skilled craftsmen and artists; no two are exactly alike. It is a fusion of traditional beauty and art, perfect as a special gift or a treat for oneself. Carefully crafted with washi and bamboo, Tsujikura’s Wagasa not only highlights Japan’s traditional beauty but also adds a touch of elegance to any space.
