Kurotani Washi, a paper-making village in Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a very rare type of Japanese paper that is made one sheet at a time by craftsmen.
Because it is strong, long-lasting, and can withstand long-term storage, it is also used in the restoration of cultural properties.
The rare Kurotani Unryu paper is used to make special washi for Tsujikura’s Japanese umbrellas.
Kurotani Unryu paper, finished after a long period of time, seems to float beautifully when held up to the sun.

-Kyoto Kurotani Specially Selected Parasol “Kinryoku”-
This is a Japanese parasol with an elegant color of Matsuba (pine needle) color and multi-colored Kozo (paper mulberry) scattered all over the surface. When it is held up to the sun, the Kozo shines golden in some places.

-Wagasa’s appeal to the senses-
・The handle of the umbrella is made of black bamboo.
t feels smooth and comfortable in your hand when you hold it.
・When the umbrella is closed, it becomes a single, thin, beautiful bamboo.
・The paper is made of long fibers of Kozo (paper mulberry), which are torn by hand and scattered on the ground paper to create a cloud-like pattern.
・When the umbrella is opened, you can hear the crispy sound of the folded washi coming apart piece by piece.
・The clasp that determines the opening of the umbrella is made of wood, not metal.
The clicking sound of the wood resonates comfortably.

This umbrella is made with Washi paper. It is slim and light, the most simple style and easy to use. It is recommended for the first Wagasa. Maiko and Geiko in Kyoto are actually using this type of Wagasa.

How to Use the Wagasa
When you walk carrying the closed umbrella, please grasp the head of the Wagasa, or for Janome please grasp the cord on the head, and for Bangasa please hold the leather strings bound around the head.

How to Open the Wagasa
The Wagasa may be difficult to open due to the waterproof grease on the Washi. Please lightly grasp the bottom of the runner at the bottom inside the umbrella, and slowly and carefully push to the top to open the Wagasa.
