Supporting the Next Generation of Kyoto Craftspeople
[Participating in the Kyomono Successor Development Project]
This is an initiative to help young artisans learn not only technical skills but also how to communicate and spread the appeal of Kyoto's traditional crafts, so that these traditions can continue into the future.
The other day, we had the opportunity to speak with university students about the history of Tsujikura and the appeal of wagasa (Japanese umbrellas). It was a valuable time to think about how we can pass on the charm of traditional crafts to the next generation.
Each wagasa is carefully handmade by artisans, one at a time, over a long process. While preserving this craftsmanship and beauty, Tsujikura will continue to deepen our learning and take on new challenges so that more people can come to know and appreciate it.
