Disney/Kyoto Traditional Crafts Series
We combined Disney elements with traditional Japanese umbrella designs (Tsukiyakko pattern and Janome pattern), which have been popular among people with a high level of aesthetic sense since ancient times.
We felt an affinity between the simple pattern and Mitsumaru, and aimed to create a design that would harmonize with the original design.
It takes a variety of specialized craftsmen to make a Japanese umbrella, including those who make the framework, those who make the parts called rokuro that connect the framework, and those who make the washi paper. Then Tsujikura's craftsmen make it into a Japanese umbrella. The process of pasting washi paper onto the umbrella body is called "do-bari." For this collaboration, we used a highly advanced Japanese umbrella technique called "kiritsugu," which involves cutting, pasting, and joining, to express Mickey and Minnie using handmade washi paper dyed in each of their own colors.
