Kyo-Yuzen Hand-Painted Wagasa “Ito Jakuchu: Birds, Animals & Flowers”
Hand-Painted Kyo-Yuzen Wagasa
“Ito Jakuchu: Birds, Animals & Flowers”
Collaboration of Kyoto Craftsmanship
This piece is the result of a special collaboration between Nariken, a Kyoto-based Kyo-Yuzen textile atelier known for its sincere dedication to traditional craftsmanship, and Tsujikura, a long-established Kyoto wagasa maker devoted to preserving Japanese culture for future generations.
In kimono production, the most essential step is the underdrawing (shita-e).
A master designer at Seiken, with over 30 years of experience creating intricate patterns, carefully hand-drew a traditional motif onto washi paper prepared for the umbrella.
Tsujikura’s artisans then crafted the wagasa using time-honored Japanese techniques, preserving this traditional craft while passing it on to the next generation.
Through the combination of skilled Kyo-Yuzen artistry and expert wagasa craftsmanship, this hand-painted Kyo-Yuzen parasol has been brought to life.
About Ito Jakuchu (1716–1800)
Ito Jakuchu was born in Kyoto as the eldest son of a greengrocer in Nishiki Market.
Surrounded by the abundance of nature—fish, plants, and animals—he developed a unique artistic vision focused on capturing the true essence of his subjects.
His works are known for their vivid colors and extraordinary detail, depicting chickens, insects, fish, and flowers with remarkable concentration and originality.
This parasol features Jakuchu’s iconic work “Birds, Animals & Flowers,” reinterpreted by Seiken’s master underdrawing artist on washi paper, and carefully crafted into a wagasa by Tsujikura artisans.
