Kyoto Kurotani Special Selection Janome "Fubuki"
Through a collaboration with "Kurotani Washi" in Kyoto, we have completed a janome (eye-of-the-snake) umbrella made with Kurotani unryu-shi (cloud-dragon paper).
The papermaking village of Kurotani in Ayabe, Kyoto, is said to have begun 800 years ago.
Kurotani Washi is made primarily from kozo (mulberry) fibers, which are hand-processed to preserve their natural strength. Each sheet is carefully crafted using traditional hand-papermaking techniques, resulting in paper that is not only beautiful but also resilient, moisture-resistant, tough, and supple. The love and strength of the people who have lived alongside this paper through the ages breathe within it.
Today, it is designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Kyoto Prefecture.
「Fubuki (Blizzard)」
This is a distinctive washi paper that intentionally incorporates the outer bark and black skin—elements usually removed when making white paper from kozo. It further enhances the texture of our Japanese umbrellas, which are crafted largely from natural materials.
Each umbrella has been meticulously crafted by our artisans, resulting in a unique and exquisite masterpiece.
※Unryu-shi: Paper characterized by a cloud-like pattern created by scattering long, hand-torn kozo fibers across the base paper.

※Because each sheet is handmade, there are individual differences in the finish.

Handling Method
How to Use the Wagasa
When you walk carrying the closed umbrella, please grasp the head of the Wagasa, or for Janome please grasp the cord on the head, and for Bangasa please hold the leather strings bound around the head.
How to Open the Wagasa
The Wagasa may be difficult to open due to the waterproof grease on the Washi. Please lightly grasp the bottom of the runner at the bottom inside the umbrella, and slowly and carefully push to the top to open the Wagasa.
